Le Web buzz starts…

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

It’s becoming somewhat of ritual. Each autumn the weather get colder and the updates about Le Web start. I have my ticket already and it makes for something to look forward to!!!

Issue sending mail on an Orange ADSL connection…

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

So you’re on holiday in France. And your hosts have given you a wi-fi connection using their “Livebox”.

Of course, this took longer than anyone expected simply because everyone had forgotten that you had to press a button on the back for the first connection from a new machine. That remembered, everything is working perfectly except one thing. You can’t send mail.

Doesn’t matter how many times you try. It can’t reach the smtp server.

Well try this. Change the port that you send the mail out on to 587. Orange blocks some of the standard ones.  No idea why.

Hopefully, this will help someone out there.

The truth…

I maybe odd but hasn’t he just shot himself and his profession here?Every article has to have a single point of view, and in this case it has to fit with the general preconception of the subject! He can’t find”news” as defined as something, he has to print a confirmation of what we already know. And the point of the press is?

“One of the good things about blogs is that they allow you to add nuance. In the news business, there is little space to tell a story. To earn the limited slot you usually have to stick with one angle. That’s a preface for expanding a little on the article we wrote in the newspaper today on France’s embrace of New World methods for selling its wine. The story fits into the classic category of “French tradition surrenders to superior Anglo-Saxon forces”. The enlightened reader smiles at another Gallic retreat in the face of globalisation but feels a twinge of regret that obstinate French excellence is again compromising with the modern world. The reality is a little more complicated.”Charles Bremner – Times Online – WBLG: France fights back with better wine

The market doesn’t always work…

As I watch in disbelief from a distance as the facade crumbles I keep on having the same thought whenever I read things like this…

Overlooked in the McCellan coverage (Scripting News)

Maybe the BBC isn’t that bad. At least they (used) take their role in society seriously.

So I think Sarkozy has to be careful what he wishes for.

It would probably be worth more…

To anyone who lives in France this description of the APEC is interesting…

“Most English speakers won’t know much about France’s Apec, a non profit organization that offers job listings and job resources in France.”

Big Win For LinkedIn As They Hook Up With France’s Apec

APEC is a non-profit because it’s a government department. “Offers job listings” is also slightly wrong; if you’re recruiting in France you MUST register the opening with the APEC.

All the details aside, this is a massive deal for LinkedIn. Congratulations!

Cars and Cities…

Looking at these photos from the wonderful ParisAvant web site I can’t help feeling that we’ve ruined our cities with cars.

Howard Kunstler would be proud of me!
